Benzema remains optimistic despite hamstring injury

Real Madrid have concerns over Karim Benzema's workload and overall fitness, with the French forward succumbing to a hamstring ailment against Elche, although the player himself remains optimistic.

As soon as the second half began, Benzema was seen holding his hamstring, with discomfort in the back of his thigh preventing him from continuing in the match.

An MRI is due to take place on Tuesday morning to determine the extent of the damage to the former Lyon goalscorer's thigh, and that will shed more light on the situation.

The hope is that Benzema will be in the best possible condition to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League tie between the Ligue 1 leaders and Los Blancos.

There is now a week without a LaLiga Santander fixture for Benzema to recover, before the Copa del Rey tie against Athletic Club at Estadio San Mames.

Benzema's schedule this season has been hectic, given the fact he plays almost every match under Carlo Ancelotti.

This can't be ideal, especially in such a long season, and warning signs have already been present after he suffered a muscle strain in his thigh in early November.

A total of 35 games played

We're only at the halfway mark of the campaign but the forward has already played 35 matches across all competitions, 28 coming with Real Madrid and seven with the French national team.

The problem is that he is currently irreplaceable for Ancelotti, and that will remain the case until at least the summer, meaning Los Merengues will have to continue to rely on a player who may well be seeing his body suffer the effects.
