Tunisia had taken a shock lead, and Brazil struggled to fully turn things around after Hazem Mastouri's strike, despite being given a golden opportunity.
Rodrygo saw an early attempt cleared off the line by Montassar Talbi before Tunisia sent their fans into raptures as Mastouri finished off a lightning-quick counter-attack with a low strike past Bento into the bottom-left corner in the 23rd minute.
Brazil pushed forward in vain, with Casemiro, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo all seeing chances go begging before they were awarded a penalty for a handball against Bronn.
Estevao stepped up and confidently fired his spot-kick high down the right of the goal, giving Aymen Dahmen, who dived the wrong way, no chance just before the break.
Elias Saad nearly piled more misery on the Selecao when he fizzed a low strike just wide of the post, with Brazil's struggles in front of goal continuing in the second half.
That was compounded in the 78th minute – Ferjani Sassi was penalised for a foul on Vitor Roque, but Paqueta blazed his stuttering effort over from 12 yards.
Brazil were denied another penalty in the 88th minute, but they came within inches of a winner as Estevao's bobbling strike struck the foot of the left post in the closing seconds.

Brazil have endured an indifferent start to life under Carlo Ancelotti, but there were glaring issues in the final third on Tuesday.
The Selecao had 21 shots worth 2.57 expected goals (xG), heavily helped by their two spot-kicks, but only hit the target on three occasions.
Rodrygo was responsible for six of those attempts (a team-high), and Vinicius five, but while the former got one effort on target, the latter failed to test Dahmen at all.
