Bristol City are signing former Manchester United prospect George Tanner in a £275,000 deal.
The 21-year-old full-back only joined Carlisle United a year ago after they picked him up when he was released by Manchester United that summer.
He had an outstanding first season in League Two, scoring three goals and making 42 appearances, and that has prompted Nigel Pearson to make his move.
The Championship side are paying £275,000 plus add-ons for the Blackpool-born right-back who initially started out as a striker before progressing through the youth ranks at United as a full-back.
Tanner has started Carlisle's opening six games and his departure will come as a blow to manager Chris Beech.
The young defender will provide competition for Danny Simpson and Zak Vyner at Ashton Gate with Pearson keen to tighten up a defence that has not kept a clean sheet since April.
