Tim Cahill said an emotional goodbye to his international career on Tuesday morning after making his final appearance for Australia.

The veteran midfielder featured as a substitute during the match against Lebanon and was already in tears before he managed to make his way onto the pitch for an appearance.

Cahill was welcomed with a standing ovation from the crowd in Sydney and left the field with his family through a guard of honour from his international team-mates and .

He was with both his children and his mother as he bade farewell to his time with the Australia national team.

The former Everton man was also accosted by a pitch invader when he ran onto the pitch, although security were quickly on the scene.

Cahill then gave a speech on the field as Australia's fans saluted one of their greatest ever players.

'This is the only time you're going to see me cry,' an emotional Cahill said during his presentation.

'Every time I wore the green and gold, I played with my heart and I never left anything on the pitch. Thank you very much Australia.'

He had earlier run onto the field in the 82nd minute of the game to pick up his 108th cap for the Socceroos.

Only one player has picked up more caps than him for the men's national side — former Fulham and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

It was Australia's last friendly match before their Asian Cup title defence in the United Arab Emirates in early 2019. They won 3-0 against Lebanon. Scotland-born winger Martin Boyle scored twice on his first international start to give the Socceroos a 2-0 lead at half-time and Mathew Leckie added the third goal in the 68th minute.
