An AI supercomputer has simulated the draw for the last-16 of the Champions League following the conclusion of the play-off round on Wednesday night.

The play-offs threw up numerous surprises as European giants AC Milan, Juventus and Manchester City all suffered an early exit.

Now, a supercomputer has shared its predictions for the next round of the competition in what is mixed news for English clubs.

Arsenal and Aston Villa are both predicted to suffer shock exits at the hands of their last-16 opponents - with a forecast that they will beaten by PSV and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

However, it is better news for current Premier League leaders Liverpool, who are predicted to overcome Portuguese side Benfica 8-3 on aggregate over two legs.

The Reds are even slated to win the competition, with the supercomputer backing them to overcome Borussia Dortmund and Inter before beating PSG in the final - which is slated to be a thrilling 4-3 encounter.

This is according to the CasinoHawks supercomputer, which estimates the outcome of each remaining fixture based on a team’s current strength based on factors such as league position and form, as well as betting market odds.

The machine then simulates the remaining games in a season 10,000 times and constructs an average league table from the ensuing simulations, to rule out anomalous results.

Outside of predicting both Arsenal and Aston Villa to be eliminated in the round of 16, it also pencils in PSG to knock out both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, the software has Club Brugge down as quarter-finalists, predicting that they will beat Lille in the last 16.

Elsewhere, it backs Inter to overcome Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, with PSV also down in the supercomputer's list of teams in the last eight.

When it comes to who English teams will face in the last-16, the picture for them became clearer on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool will face one of PSG or Benfica, after the Parisians blew away fellow Ligue 1 side Brest 7-0 at the Parc des Princes.

Moving on to their Premier League title rivals Arsenal, the Gunners known they face a side from the Eredivisie in Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven.

Aston Villa are back in the Champions League for the first time since they won the European Cup in 1982-83, the season after they won the trophy.

They will play either Dortmund, Club Brugge or Lille for a place in the quarter-finals.
