Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku set for swift return

Christopher Nkunku (26) is set for a swift return to action, according to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins. The France international missed Chelsea’s FA Cup victory over Preston North End on Saturday, but he could make his return next week.

Following his €52m summer move from RB Leipzig, Nkunku has featured just four times for Chelsea due to a knee injury suffered during the club’s pre-season tour. The Frenchman made his debut for the Blues against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Christmas Eve, and netted a consolation goal.

However, as he return to full fitness, Nkunku has received a setback. The forward was absent from Chelsea’s squad this weekend with Mauricio Pochettino revealing that Nkunku was dealing with a hip problem. “We need to see if he can be ready in the next few games,” added the Argentinian manager.

According to Hawkins, there is no concern over Nkunku, who could make his comeback as early as Tuesday, when Chelsea face Middlesbrough in an EFL Cup semi-final. However, should Nkunku not be fit to face the Championship side, he could nonetheless be fit to face local rivals Fulham next Saturday. Nkunku’s absence against Preston was therefore preventative rather than anything serious.
