An altogether encouraging update surrounding the long-term future of Trevoh Chalobah at Chelsea has come to the fore online this afternoon.
Cobham standout
The name of 22-year-old Chalobah has of course proven a prominent one across Chelsea’s season to date.
Amid a dearth of defensive options on the back of this summer’s European Championships and Copa America, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel opted to hand Chalobah the chance to impress as part of his first-team ranks throughout pre-season.
And this was an opportunity which the club’s youth product went on to grasp with both hands.
In turn, on the back of a series of starring displays, including in a UEFA Super Cup showdown with Villarreal, Chalobah has been afforded appearances in a none-too-shabby eight of Chelsea’s fixtures to this point in 2021/22.
This includes starts in five of the club’s Premier League outings, across which the Pensioners conceded just a solitary goal. The gifted stopper has even managed to chip in with a pair of goals.
Staying put
In turn, it came as little surprise, over recent weeks, to hear of the board in west London making their first efforts to tie their up-and-coming defender down for the long-term.
Chalobah is evidently seen as a core piece of the Chelsea puzzle moving forward, culminating in negotiations being opened over a new contract.
And, on Sunday, an altogether positive update has been forthcoming on the situation.
As per a report from the reliable Adam Newson of The Athletic, the two parties are understood to be ‘close to agreeing a new long-term contract’, expected to see Chalobah tied down for the foreseeable future.
