CHELSEA have stepped up their pursuit of Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho after Enzo Maresca opened the door for Nicolas Jackson to leave.

A formal enquiry has now been made by the Blues over United's Argentine winger and they are awaiting a response.

Maresca is hoping to land both Garnacho and RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons before the close of the window.

United are expected to ask for around £40million for Garnacho, who has been frozen out at Old Trafford by boss Ruben Amorim.

While Chelsea are working on more incoming deals, there are still a number of players set to leave this summer.

There is now an expectation that Jackson, who signed a nine-year deal last summer, will be one of those to depart.

The forward's future was thrown into doubt following a difficult end to last season and the arrival of two new strikers at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle, Manchester United and Aston Villa have all considered moves for the Senegal international.

As it stands, Newcastle look the most likely destination, though the Blues value the 24-year-old at £80m.

Jackson would be open to a move to St. James' Park though no formal talks have taken place as of yet.

Asked about Jackson's situation, Maresca said: "Nico is okay. He’s okay.

"When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen.

"This also involves Nico’s situation.

"At the moment we also had two strikers arrive, both of them in the USA, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

"So we will see what happens."

Talks are continuing over a £50m move for Dutch international Simons, who is expected to fly to France with the German side for a pre-season friendly against Lens today.

Burnley and Chelsea remain in talks over the sale of Armando Broja.
Broja is one of a number of players who have been training separately from Maresca's first team this summer.

The Italian has admitted that he is paying no attention to the 'bomb squad' and only finds out their fate from a text or a tap on the shoulder.

He said: "When they leave, it's just the club that they text me or they call me.

“It was just mentioned to me that Lesley joined Burnley.

“I have this kind of news from the club because I don't pay attention to the ones that are training and need to leave.

“I just focus on how we prepare for the session, how we can win games.”
