During the FIFA international break, the city of Chicago welcomed a friendly clash between two Liga MX sides: Chivas Guadalajara and Club León. Sunday’s match ended in a 2–1 win for El Rebaño Sagrado, with goals from Armando “Hormiga” González and Cade Cowell. Emilio Rodríguez scored the lone goal for La Fiera.
This exhibition served as a valuable opportunity for both squads to maintain match fitness while the Mexican national team was in action over the weekend.
Chicharito misses big chance
In the 13th minute, Javier “Chicharito” Hernández had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after receiving a pass inside the box. However, he failed to connect cleanly with his right foot, missing the target from close range. The miss drew audible disappointment from the Chicago crowd.
Hernández, who started the match, was substituted in the 73rd minute for Teun Wilke. Though he had a few more looks at goal, he couldn’t find the back of the net.
Since returning to Liga MX, Chicharito has scored just twice in 24 appearances. His last goal came on February 23 in a 3–1 loss to Atlético San Luis at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez. Since then, his name has been more prominent in social media controversies and streaming appearances than on the scoresheet. His impact has been minimal, and Chivas have struggled to find form since his return.
Next up: El Clásico Nacional against América
Next week, Chivas will travel to the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes to face Club América in the highly anticipated Clásico Nacional. Gabriel Milito’s squad has only managed four points in the Apertura 2025 tournament and is currently mired in a serious slump.
Despite the tough outlook, América also comes into the match on shaky ground, having lost their recent friendly 3-1 to D.C. United. The stage is set for a dramatic showdown between two of Mexico’s most storied clubs.
