Chile 2-3 Costa Rica: Alexis Sanchez sees penalty saved

Alexis Sanchez saw a penalty saved as Chile slumped to a 3-2 home defeat in a friendly match with Costa Rica.

The Manchester United forward's tame penalty was repelled by Costa Rica goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado in the 82nd-minute in Rancagua.

That would have reduced the arrears to 2-3 after Chile fell three goals behind and though Sanchez did score later on to set up a tense finale, it was a another disappointing outing for him.

Costa Rica had not tasted victory in nine international matches dating back to the World Cup in Russia but they profited from some calamitous Chilean defending to race into a three-goal lead at the Estadio El Teniente.

Kendall Waston rose highest to head home Joel Campbell's corner in the 36th minute, with covering defender Arturo Vidal unable to clear it off the line.

Waston then scored his third international goal in two games when he reacted quickest to turn home a shot that had struck the post and Gary Medel's boot.

And the home supporters were booing when Ronald Matarrita scored Costa Rica's third shortly after the hour mark, getting onto a long ball to find the top corner.

Chile gave themselves a glimmer of hope with 20 minutes remaining when Sebastian Vegas scored from the rebound after Nicolas Castillo's header was touched onto the bar.

Sanchez then saw his penalty saved but he did ensure a nervy finale for Costa Rica when he scored minutes later, but the visitors hung on through six minutes of stoppage time to claim a much-needed win.
