After a free transfer to Panathinaikos, De Vrij discussed his decision to leave Internazionale this summer.

De Vrij told ESPN: "My contract was about to expire, and I wanted to become an important player again somewhere else. Unfortunately, I didn't play much for Internazionale last season. Then I discovered this historic club; they haven't won a trophy in a long time, and they have a very good plan in motion. The new board and a young, modern coach have already put the team on the right track. This attracted me. And I was on vacation in Athens at the time, which was great. Did that vacation play a role? Yes, you could say it was just a coincidence."
Regarding the Feyenoord option, De Vrij said: "No, I hadn't heard about it. The World Cup? It was tough not to be selected. I really wanted to go, but unfortunately, due to a minor injury, I couldn't make it in the end. However, I can still play for the national team."
