Dean Henderson left 'perplexed' by claims he could stay at Man Utd but his departure may be delayed

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has reportedly been left 'perplexed'  by suggestions that he could stay at the club this summer.

The 26-year-old, who has been on loan at Nottingham Forest this season, is being heavily linked with a permanent move to the club, with Steve Cooper seeing him as a long-term option for the Garibaldi, as they look to shore things up at the back.

It's been a difficult season for the 26-year-old, who played 18 Premier League matches following his move before having to undergo surgery on a thigh injury that ruled him out for 19 Premier League matches in the second-half of the season.

Meanwhile at Old Trafford, questions have been mounting over the future of first choice goalkeeper David de Gea, with some criticizing his form this year after he conceded a string of errors, with some, including Paul Scholes, speculating over his future at the club.

That conjecture has intensified towards the back end of the season, with Mail Sport reporting that the Spanish international was in a 'contemplative mood' over his future and could be set to depart the club, with Erik ten Hag not convinced about keeping him.

His contract will expire on Friday and there is much uncertainty over whether he will stay or go, with the Carabao Cup winners now being linked with Inter Milan's Andre Onana and Brentford's David Raya.

With Henderson still on the books at Old Trafford, there are some suggestions that he could stay at the club until United completely resolve their issues in net.

Yet, according to Manchester Evening News, the English shot-stopper, who is also notably a graduate of the United academy, was 'perplexed' by suggestions that he could stay, with the outlet also claiming 'he is convinced he will join Forest permanently'.

Despite that, the paper also states that 'United's complex goalkeeper situation could delay his departure' from Old Trafford, but they claim United could net a possible £30m from his transfer.

It comes as Henderson recently claimed he 'p****d off the Dutch manager' and believes 'he is not in line for a comeback' admitting he didn't want Ten Hag to see him in training as he thought he'd want him to stay and keep him as competition for his first-choice.

'I told all the hierarchy: "I need to go and play football. I don't want to be playing second fiddle," he said in an interview with talkSPORT.

'And it panned out so I was almost gone before the manager came in.'

The 26-year-old, who has kept 13 clean sheets in 29 senior appearances for Man United, also turned down a chance to return to the club during the middle of last season.

His contract at United will expire in 2025, having previously spent time on loan at Sheffield United before returning to the club's senior side in 2020 as a reserve goalkeeper.

United have now declared their interest in Onana, sounding out the goalkeeper, who could join the club in a £50m move.

Several other teams have been eyeing up the Cameroon international, including Chelsea, who could part ways with Edouard Mendy this summer as Saudi Arabian sides are stepping up their attempts to snap up some of European football's top talents.

But United may be interested to hear that Kepa Arrizabalaga, who also looked like he could leave Stamford Bridge this summer, has told Mauricio Pochettino that he wants to fight for his place at the club.

That may be one less competitor for United to deal with if Ten Hag wants to sign a new first choice goalkeeper.
