A moment of ingenuity from Dominik Szoboszlai set Liverpool on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win over Marseille on Wednesday.

Liverpool came into the game looking for a statement performance having gone four Premier League matches without a win ahead of the Champions League clash. The Reds were denied an opener when Hugo Ekitike’s first-half goal was ruled out for offside but they took the lead on the stroke of half time through a moment of magic.
In the final minutes of the first half Liverpool won a free kick on the edge of the Marseille penalty box. Szoboszlai stepped up to take it and slide an inch-perfect shot under the defensive wall and into the back of the net.
Liverpool added two more goals in the second half to secure the win and move up to fourth in the league phase standings. Szoboszlai’s creative free kick was featured on UEFA’s round-up of the best goals from the Wednesday action.
Speaking after the game, Szoboszlai revealed the logic behind his unorthodox free kick: “I did my homework and got told that if no one is lying down, then I can hit it under the wall. I tried it and it worked out.”
Liverpool round out their league phase fixture list with a home game against Qarabag FK next Wednesday. Arne Slot’s side need a win to guarantee a top eight finish and advance straight to the Champions League round of 16.
