Borussia Dortmund climbed to second in the Bundesliga table, at least temporarily, as Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier scored in a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Dortmund knew three points would lift them above RB Leipzig, at least until Ole Werner's team take on Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, and they made no mistake.
Niko Kovac's men – who were without the suspended Jobe Bellingham – went ahead in the 10th minute as Niklas Sule's right-wing cross found Brandt at the far post, and the BVB number 10 powered home.
Gladbach barely threatened in the first half, only firing off three shots and failing to hit the target once, while Dortmund's best chance to go 2-0 up saw Karim Adeyemi denied by Moritz Nicolas at close quarters.
The visitors barely offered any more as an offensive force after the interval, either, though Dortmund left it late to get their clinching goal.
Beier missed one great chance to kill the contest in the 89th minute, but seven minutes into stoppage time, Yan Couto found Fabio Silva in space in the centre, and the substitute offloaded for Beier to slot a neat, left-footed finish into the far corner.

They have also won each of the last 12 meetings between the sides at the Westfalenstadion, with this just the second time they have won 12 straight home Bundesliga games against a specific opponent (also against MSV Duisburg, 1977 to 1998).
And the visitors could have few complaints about the result. They only hit the target with one of their six shots, while Dortmund fired off 10 shots and hit the target four times – the hosts also won the expected goals battle by 1.37 xG to 0.23.
