Tottenham have been exploring the possibility of making a move for Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo as part of a process to discover how far they can push their midfield this summer.
The conversations are at an early stage, but his name has been discussed internally as they consider whether or not to make their interest more formal.
Spurs are aware United are not actively looking to sell him, but also know the club have previously shown a willingness to listen to offers if the price is right.
Mainoo is one of several players Spurs have considered as they weigh up how to reshape the centre of the pitch - and his versatility could be key as they attempt to strengthen various aspects of the team.
The ambition is not just to add depth, but to bring in players who can immediately enhance the starting XI - ideally with Premier League experience, a sharp mind, and the ability to adapt quickly to Thomas Frank’s system.

Tottenham have already acted decisively in one case, triggering Morgan Gibbs-White’s release clause at Nottingham Forest. They are now waiting to see how that unfolds - with Forest seeking legal action over how they discovered his release clause figure.
Gibbs-White is seen as a strong stylistic fit and they hope it will come through - but they have to be prepared for any outcome.
Also, they want to sign a more defensive minded player additionally, anyway.
Joao Palhinha is further along in the recruitment process. Spurs have been told that Bayern Munich would prefer a permanent sale over a loan, which could set them apart from other interested parties Fulham and Manchester United, who would favour a temporary move.
Palhinha is not pushing to leave but has limited clarity over his role next season and is keeping his options open.
The club’s dream signing remains Adam Wharton, who they rate incredibly highly. But Crystal Palace are setting the bar extremely high - some sources suggest over £80 million - so even with their new ambition Spurs could struggle.
Other options have been explored, including Joao Gomes from Wolves and Carlos Baleba of Brighton, but neither looks straightforward as their clubs do not want to sell.
Juventus player and former Aston Villa man Douglas Luiz has also been linked, and is seeking Premier League employment, but as of Tuesday night there had been no serious development.
Tottenham may yet even have other names on the list - as they are trying to spring surprises this summer.
