Eagle-eyed fans accuse Maguire of injuring Martial during defeat at Sevilla

Manchester United fans with keen eyes spotted how Anthony Martial was injured during their defeat to Sevilla - and lay the blame squarely at one of his team-mates.

The 27-year-old Frenchman went down injured in the corner when Sevilla got their second goal of the night through Loic Bade just after half-time.

While Martial briefly carried on, he was forced to come off the pitch in the 54th minute and replaced by Wout Weghorst.

The injury compounds Man United's problems - Thursday's Europa League exit in Spain is quickly followed by Sunday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, and it is doubtful whether the Frenchman will return to face Brighton.

And fans of the Red Devils spotted that the injury was picked up after captain Harry Maguire pushed Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabitzer into Martial while scrambling to clear the ball swinging in from the corner.

One supporter tweeted: 'Maguire injured Martial you couldn’t write it', and another added: 'My chest!!!! Maguire why!!!!! We are sorry'.

Others doubled down on the criticism of the 30-year-old centre-back, claiming 'Maguire is a liability!!', and 'Honestly never disliked a player this much'.

Another highlighted another incident where Maguire caused an injury to a different colleague previously, noting: 'He did the same thing with Pogba', alongside images of the now-Juventus man Paul Pogba being inadvertently kicked in the head.

But one fan also joked in defence of the England defender, at the expense of the Frenchman's injury problems. The tweet read: 'at this point, walking could injure martial lol'.

And others felt that Maguire was being unfairly hounded for the incident, believing Sabitzer to be at fault for Martial's injury.

'It’s actually Sabitzer. @Specsavers have a word', one fan stated, as another added 'It was Sabitzer don’t make it worse'.

In the wake of Man United's display in Spain, manager Erik ten Hag said the performance was 'unacceptable', and that his players were 'not good enough' as the fell 3-0 to Sevilla and exited the competition 5-3 on aggregate.

Goalkeeper David De Gea was criticised by Robbie Savage for his role in Sevilla's second goal, with the pundit declaring: 'I don't know what he's doing'.

Following Man United's European exit, the club are still fighting for a Champions League place via the Premier League, and also have the potential for a domestic cup double after winning the Carabao Cup.

Third-placed Man United take on seventh-placed Brighton on Sunday afternoon for a spot in June's FA Cup final.
