Eddie Howe faces Gordon conundrum ahead of Newcastle's clash against Chelsea

Eddie Howe knows he has a big selection call ahead of Newcastle’s Champions League six-pointer against Chelsea - what to do with Anthony Gordon?

The England winger has not started a game since being sent off in the FA Cup fifth round defeat by Brighton at the start of March. He was suspended for three matches, including the Carabao Cup final, and has either been injured or on the bench ever since.

But Gordon gave his most impactful cameo yet during last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Brighton, and has followed that up with what Howe calls his ‘best week’ of training since injuring his hip during March’s international break.

With three games to go in Newcastle’s quest for the top five, and with Gordon having proven himself to be a player for the big occasion this season, Howe admits he has given him a decision to make.

‘There’s an understanding from Anthony that he hasn’t been fully fit (in recent weeks),’ said Howe. ‘We have had discussions and communications, which I try to do with all the players. But naturally, I know now, he feels good within his body and feels ready to start. That is the decision I have to make.

‘But ultimately, you have to try and pick on what you see and the relationships in the team have been good, so you’ve got to be careful not to change something that doesn’t need changing.’

If Howe were to make a change, it would possibly mean breaking up the left-sided pairing of Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes, which has done so well in Gordon’s absence. The head coach seemed reluctant to do that when pressed on their form.

‘I can’t give enough credit to both Tino and Harvey, he said. ‘I think Tino has been outstanding. I really do. Defensively and offensively. His use of the ball, his tactical understanding has been excellent.

‘And then to Harvey. Harvey's played in his position and he’s played it very well. He's an undoubted goal threat in every game and he's one of our highest players for shooting and chances created, so I'm delighted that he's shown everybody just how good he is.’
