Mexico’s national team suffered an unexpected blow just hours before its friendly against Bolivia in South America, after confirmation of the physical issues affecting Edson Álvarez, a key figure in Javier Aguirre’s setup.

In a message posted on social media, the Mexican midfielder revealed that he is not at full strength, as he has been dealing with an ankle injury since December, one that has limited his performances both for his club and for the national team.
Injury originated in Turkey
The Fenerbahce midfielder explained that the problem began on December 1 during the derby against Galatasaray, when he took a heavy knock to the ankle late in the match. Despite the injury, and in coordination with the medical staff, he managed to keep playing, although the discomfort never fully went away.
STATEMENT
On December 1, during the derby against Galatasaray, I suffered a heavy blow to my ankle near the end of the match.
In coordination with the medical staff, and thanks to the work we carried out, I was able to continue playing in subsequent games. However, the discomfort persisted, so the decision was made to stop, which unfortunately prevented me from playing in the Super Cup final.
Since then, rehabilitation and treatment have not stopped. The sensations gradually improved, to the point that I was able to log some minutes in the Europa League against Aston Villa.
Unfortunately, after that match, the pain returned. As a result, and once again in coordination with the coaching staff and medical team, we decided to stop again in order to reassess the situation and determine the severity of the injury more precisely.
My desire to help the team and be on the field has always been a priority. The goal is to recover fully, return at full strength, and continue showing my best version to contribute to the objectives this great institution deserves.
Rehabilitation and recent setback
After several weeks of physical work and rehabilitation, his condition appeared to be improving, to the point that Álvarez logged minutes in the Europa League against Aston Villa.
However, following that match, the pain returned, forcing him to halt his activity once again and begin a longer recovery process.
Álvarez himself acknowledged that the injury kept him out of the Super Cup final, but stressed that since then he has remained fully committed to his rehabilitation, with the aim of returning in better shape and preventing the issue from worsening.
World Cup doubts and possible surgery
Álvarez also said he is trying to avoid surgery, as an operation could put his inclusion in Mexico’s final World Cup squad at risk. His name had recently been linked to a potential return to Ajax, a move that is now on hold.
In closing, the Mexico captain made clear that his priority is a full recovery, returning stronger and delivering his best form for both club and country.
“My desire to help the team and be on the field has always been a priority,” he said, underlining his commitment despite the setback.
