FA Cup prize money by round explained as EPL big guns enter competition

  /  autty

The Premier League big guns will this weekend enter the FA Cup and while it retains plenty of mystique for fans of clubs lower down the pyramid, the financial rewards on offer remain minuscule compared to what is available elsewhere.

Third round action gets underway on Thursday with three ties, including Everton hosting Peterborough at what could be the final cup game at Goodison Park, and will end on Monday when non-League Dagenham and Redbridge make the short trip to Millwall.

In between Arsenal host Manchester United in the most eye-catching fixture, while Tottenham travel to Tamworth and Chelsea host League Two strugglers Morecambe.

But the 32 third round winners will pocket only £115,000 in prize money with the eventual victors in May banking a total of £3.65m.

That is of course before factoring in gate receipts and broadcast revenue - which remain considerable sources of income for sides such as non-League Tamworth.

But it still pales in significance compared to the minimum £60m that the UEFA Champions League winners make as part of a total package hovering above £100m once other revenue streams are factored in. The Premier League champions bank more than £60m before TV money.

There will be no replays in this weekend's third round ties with all games level after 90 minutes decided by extra time and, if required, a penalty shootout.

Manchester United won last year's final, defeating neighbours City at Wembley.
