On May 8, according to TA reporter Adam Crafton, FIFA plans to hold grand opening ceremonies for each first match played by the host countries during the 2026 World Cup. It will also hold special commemorative ceremonies in Houston and Philadelphia on July 4, US Independence Day, to celebrate the 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) of the founding of the United States. This arrangement aims to combine the World Cup matches with the host countries' important historical events, creating a visual and musical feast for global fans.

Opening Ceremony Lineup Announced

According to sources, FIFA has arranged a series of internationally renowned artists to perform for the first matches of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. For Canada, the invited performers include famous singer Michael Bublé, Alanis Morissette, and young musical prodigy Alessia Cara. They will appear at the kickoff performance of Canada's first group match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto, bringing a stunning opening to the audience at the venue and the global television audience.

On the same day, the US men's national team will face Paraguay at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles. The opening ceremony for the US will feature pop singer Katy Perry as the headlining act, with rapper Future and Los Angeles-based DJ Sanjoy joining the performance lineup to add modern pop music elements to the match.

In addition, Thai singer Lisa, who rose to fame with the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK, will participate in the opening ceremony, presenting a stage effect of transnational cultural integration for the global audience. Paraguay will also have artists participating in the opening ceremony, with Paraguayan singer Marilina Bogado taking the stage.

Mexico's first match is scheduled for June 11 at the Estadio Azteca, where Mexico will face South Africa. The Mexican opening ceremony will invite the multiple Grammy Award-winning rock band Mana, as well as pop singer Alejandro Fernández and singer Belinda, to perform. At the same time, Los Ángeles Azules, a representative band of the Mexican traditional musical style Cumbia, will also participate in the performance. In addition, South African singer-songwriter Tyla will also add exotic flair and musical diversity to the opening ceremony.

In addition to the above-mentioned lineup, FIFA has also arranged for several globally renowned artists to participate in the performances of the three opening ceremonies, including J Balvin from Colombia, Anitta from Brazil, Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean, the Palestinian-Chilean duo Elyanna, and Vegedream from France. In addition, Canadian artists Jessie Reyez, Nora Fatehi, and William Prince will also appear at the opening ceremonies, injecting different styles of music into the three opening ceremonies.

Opening Ceremony Arrangements and Pre-Match Procedures

According to planning documents obtained by The Athletic, FIFA will encourage fans to enter the stadium early to watch the opening ceremonies, which are scheduled to begin 90 minutes before the kickoff of each match. In terms of specific timing, the Mexican opening ceremony is expected to last 16 minutes and 30 seconds, while the opening ceremonies for the United States and Canada are both planned to last 13 minutes. After the opening ceremonies, the players will warm up on the field before the match, and the official procedures for each match will be held, starting 25 minutes before kickoff and lasting 13 minutes each.

This arrangement not only ensures the ceremonial feel of the opening ceremonies but also provides the players with sufficient pre-match preparation time. FIFA's planners hope that this arrangement will allow fans to enjoy the musical feast without missing the exciting moments of the match, while also taking into account the standardized nature of the event procedures.

US 250th Anniversary Commemoration and Trump's Background

In addition to the World Cup opening ceremonies, FIFA will also combine the celebration of the 250th anniversary of US independence with special commemorative ceremonies on July 4. On that day, two Round of 16 matches will be held in Philadelphia and Houston, and each match will feature 250th-anniversary-themed celebrations before kickoff to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Specific details of the ceremonies have not yet been announced, but they are expected to incorporate music, visual displays, and historical and cultural elements to tell the story of American history to a global audience.

Since returning to power, US President Donald Trump has taken a number of measures to strengthen the "America 250" celebrations and encourage the integration of sporting events with his political ideas and celebrations. This includes the establishment of the "White House 250 Working Group," chaired by Trump, with cabinet members also participating. Trump also launched the "Freedom 250" campaign and announced a national prayer event aimed at "rededicating America as one nation under God."

In addition, he also arranged for a White House UFC event and the inaugural Patriot Games, a four-day event in which one male and one female high school student from each state and territory participated.

Last year, The Athletic revealed that the World Cup White House Working Group, chaired by Trump and directed by Andrew Giuliani, had pushed for the placement of large "freedom"-themed trailers decorated with the American flag at official fan festivals in US World Cup host cities to celebrate the Freedom 250th anniversary. This initiative reflects FIFA's emphasis on US celebrations in event planning.

In an interview with The Athletic, Giuliani said that the World Cup is a "great opportunity to showcase America's first 250 years of brilliant achievements." He emphasized: "President Trump represents Americans who do not need to apologize for imperfections in the nation's history. We can look back at the achievements of the past 250 years, see the contributions America has made to Western civilization, and truly celebrate America's greatness."

FIFA's Interaction with Trump

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly shown goodwill to Trump in public, including awarding Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Award in December, attending Trump's pre-inauguration rally and inauguration ceremony, and visiting Qatar and Saudi Arabia with Trump. He also attended a meeting of the Peace Committee led by Trump and wore a red hat printed with "USA" and "45-47," symbolizing Trump's non-consecutive presidential terms. This series of interactions shows that FIFA has invested a lot of resources in combining global events with US political and cultural activities.

The World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium on July 19. FIFA will host opening ceremonies and halftime shows, but the performers have not yet been announced. On the official music front, the World Cup album will include the singles "Illuminate," a collaboration between Jessie Reyez and Elyanna, and "Por Ella," performed by Los Ángeles Azules and Belinda, providing a rich musical experience for the event.
