Fans despair at Marcelo after Real Madrid star's lacklustre defending

Marcelo has been blasted by Real Madrid supporters on social media for his poor defending in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg draw with Barcelona.

The Brazilian left back - renowned for being better going forward than in defence - was caught out ahead of Malcom's 57th-minute equaliser.

Marcelo was badly out of position as Malcom slotted home a rebound goal in acres of space down the left hand side of Real's defence.

He had been pushing up to support an attack when his team mates lost possession, with video footage showing him jogging back as Barca streamed forward down the Real right.

It was only when the ball came free to the Barca right, with Malcom poised to strike, that Marcelo started to sprint back and show effort - but by now it was too late.

Sergio Ramos had done brilliantly to clear a Luis Suarez shot off the line, but could do nothing as Malcom controlled and composedly curled the ball into the back of the net.

Marcelo's dire defending drew the ire of social media, with some suggesting that Real would be better off playing without their first choice left back.

Others suggested that the Brazilian simply does not have enough understanding of effective defending, labeling him 'pathetic' and 'painful'.

The game ended 1-1 at the Nou Camp, Lucas Vazquez's early opener cancelled out by Malcom, meaning all is to play for in the second leg at the Bernabeu.
