Darwin Nunez has been brutally mocked by Liverpool fans after missing a golden opportunity to put his team in the lead against Aston Villa.

The Reds endured a challenging game as Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equaliser in the 61st minute after numerous missed chances in front of the Villa goal.

It came after Aston Villa took the 2-1 lead with a header from Ollie Watkins, which came in extra time during the first half, following a cross from Lucas Digne on the left flank.

Despite recording just two big chances throughout the entire game, the hosts managed to score the 1-1 equaliser as Youri Tielemans found the back of the net in the 38th minute.

His strike came as a response to Mohamed Salah's goal just nine minutes earlier, following a huge mistake by Villa's right back Andres Garcia.

However, Nunez had an excellent opportunity to give Liverpool the lead in the middle of the second half after he received a perfect pass from Dominik Szoboszlai, but he ended up hitting the ball significantly over the wide-open goal.

Liverpool fans were quick to react to on social media considering that Nunez's miss cost the team two crucial points in the Premier League.

One said: 'Nunez mate I’m done with you, that’s the final straw.'

Another added: 'How can Nunez physically hit that ball so high'

A third supporter said: 'Premier league athlete, league 2 finisher.'

'I just cannot put up with Nunez any longer, regardless of whether he's a cult hero or not,' said a fan, while another added: 'Nunez has been on the pitch 2 mins and I already want Slot to take him off. I’m done.'

Undeniably, Nunez's 24-minute appearance will be well-remembered by Liverpool fans, who witnessed a miss worth 0.89(xG).

The 2024-25 campaign is another challenging season for the 25-year-old striker, who has started only on seven occasions out of 21 Premier League games, scoring four goals.

The Uruguay international saw his move to Anfield in the summer of 2022 for a fee rising to £85million.

Arne Slot has mostly favoured Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz as his side's striker position amid Nunez's inconsistency.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will be set for a victory against West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Should they get the win, the gap between the leaders and second place will be five points.

Liverpool, however, have another opportunity to improve their chances for an end-of-season triumph in their game against reigning title holders Manchester City on Sunday.

The clash comes after the Citizens were brutally knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid with an aggregate score of 6-3.
