Disgraced former goalkeeper Iker Casillas has again been slammed on social media after he tweeted 'I am Spanish' on National Spain Day - just three days after he was widely condemned for jokingly tweeting that he was gay.
Casillas has been the subject of fierce criticism for his 'I am gay' tweet on Sunday, which he later deleted after claiming his account had been hacked, despite the post being online for more than two hours.
The 46-year-old ex-Real Madrid 'keeper and Spain international's tweets in the days since have been met with a backlash from fans on the platform.
And that continued on Wednesday when Casillas tweeted 'I am Spanish' to mark National Spain Day, an annual holiday held on October 12.
'Someone please take his phone away,' one user wrote, while another said: 'I no longer distinguish between reality and hacking.'
A third said: 'Very good, Iker. Tell us more bulls*** about yourself.'
Another user said: 'What's this guy's password for it to be hacked every other day?'
Others referenced the fact Casillas, 41, has still not apologised for his 'I am gay' tweet.
'Yeah yeah you're Spanish, but are you at least sorry about saying you're gay as a 'joke' and being disrespectful towards a whole community? That's what I wanna know,' a Twitter user wrote.
Another added: 'Today it's National Day in Spain, but you have to purposely seek damage to write the same semantic formula of the disaster PR you had just three days ago.'
Casillas, who split from his wife Sara Carbonero in March 2021 after five years of marriage, is thought to have tweeted the joke in response to media reports linking him to a string of women including, most recently, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's ex Shakira.
Barcelona legend Carles Puyol also got involved as he tweeted 'It's time to tell our story Iker' in response to Casillas' tweet, before he later apologised.
Openly gay Australian footballer Josh Cavallo hit out at the Spanish legend and Puyol. 'It's a difficult journey that any LGBTQ+ ppl have to go through,' he said.
'To see my role models and legends of the game make fun out of coming out and my community is beyond disrespectful.'
Casillas was also asked whether he had been hacked when he posted a photo from Greece on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old had signalled a foreign trip was in the offing with a first photo since he claimed his account had been hacked after the gay tweet disappeared showing him in a lift with a suitcase.
'We're going on a plane,' he wrote alongside the photo.
'On Tuesday, after he posted a photo of the iconic lighthouse at Chania on the north-west coast of the Greek island of Crete, one Instagram fan responded by asking him on social media: 'Have you been hacked or are you in Greece?'
