Fans mock Asensio after failed ‘no-look’ finish against Roma

Marco Asensio almost scored an early contender for goal of the season on Wednesday night but many fans felt the attacking midfielder went one step too far in his attempt to pull off the sublime.

Los Blancos kicked off the defence of their Champions League crown with a dominant 3-0 victory over Roma at the Bernebeu, Isco, Gareth Bale and Mariano getting on the scoresheet.

Asensio came close to getting a goal of his own and some viewers felt the Spaniard was more than a little wasteful.

With his side 2-0 up, the 22-year-old produced a fantastic piece of skill as he left two Roma defenders for dead with an inventive turn in the box.

However, he quickly went from hero to zero as he passed up the chance he had created for himself with a failed 'no-look' finish that was  saved by the goalkeeper.

Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui did not hide his disapproval, turning away in disgust and shaking his head.

Naturally, thousands of fans took to social media to discuss the incident with some praising the piece of skill and others criticising the unnecessary nature of the attempted finish.

Many used the the failed effort to compare Asensio with Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, who has built a reputation for no-look goals and passes.

The Brazilian scored three such goals for the Reds last season, against West Ham, Sevilla and Swansea.

'I'm sorry Asensio, but there's only one man who can do that and his name's Roberto Firmino,' one supporter wrote.

'You're not Firmino, keep practising,' tweeted another while one fan claimed the Spain international was now on his way to consult Firmino on how it's done.

The 'no-look- trick was made famous by Firmino's Brazilian compatriot Ronaldinho, who would perform the move at one point in most matches.
