Fans mock Gary Neville for 'discovering what a holiday is' as 'mini-retirement'

Gary Neville has been mocked by fans online after an old clip of the Manchester United legend claiming he enjoys 'mini-retirements' resurfaced.

Neville, the former United right back turned Sky Sports pundit, explained his unique spin on holidays during an appearance on The Diary Of A CEO podcast with Dragons' Den star Steven Bartlett last year.

While discussing his drive to succeed and the balance between work and pleasure, the 48-year-old, who juggles work as a pundit with a number of business ventures, said: 'But what you can have is mini-retirements during the year, and that's what I've tried to do. I don't do it very well.

'So for instance, this weekend I'm going to Spain Friday until Monday morning. That's like a mini-retirement.'

A confused Bartlett laughed: 'That's a weekend...'

Neville then responded: 'It's a weekend, it's a mini-retirement. It's where I can basically say for three days, I'm there and I'm basically taking it. I don't think about work. I will, but... and sometimes some of my best ideas come when I'm on these types of trips.

'But in six weeks, I'll have another mini-retirement for five days or four days, rather than thinking you're going to stop for six months and sort of have a sabbatical. That's not probably gonna happen with people like you or I because we just basically don't work that way.

'So to have lots of mini-retirements during the year is what I've tried to do in the last few years.'

Nine months on from the episode's release, Neville's 'mini-retirement' claim has resurfaced and gone viral on social media, with fans joking that the United legend is simply discussing the basic concept of holidays.

One user posted a clip of The Diary Of A Ceo moment on Twitter and wrote: 'Absolutely dying at this clip of Gary Neville seeming to discover what a holiday is'.

Another commented: 'Love that he thinks him and Steve are unique because they don't take 6-month sabbaticals every year'.

A third quipped: '"At night I love to get in bed and have what I call a maxi-nap."'

'I can't stop laughing at this,' said another.

One put sarcastically: 'I’m looking forward to my mini retirement on Friday and then back to work Monday. It’s the way forward.'

Another referenced a famous Cliff Richard song by joking: 'We're all going on a summer mini-retirement, we're all going for a day or two'.

While one urged Neville's co-pundit Jamie Carragher to join in: 'Hope that @Carra23 is on to him for this'.

Neville made 602 appearances in his 19-year career with United after emerging from the club's famous Class of 92 academy team, going on to win eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, as many League Cups and two Champions Leagues.

After retiring in 2011, the ex-defender transitioned into punditry and has since become one of the country's leading football analysts on Sky Sports along with former rival turned television partner Carragher.

As well as his role as a pundit, Neville also co-owns League Two club Salford City with his fellow Class of 92 graduates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.

The former United players have since guided Salford from non-league to the fourth tier of English football after setting their sights on reaching the Championship within 15 years of their ownership.

Neville also founded his own investment business, Relentless Group, and co-owns hospitality management company GG Hospitality.
