Fans see funny side of dour Havertz with Man of the Match trophy after Germany's World Cup exit

Kai Havertz was less than thrilled by having to collect his Man of the Match award following Germany's shock World Cup elimination.

The Chelsea forward netted a brace after coming on as a second-half substitution in the 4-2 victory over Costa Rica on Thursday night.

Despite the win, Germany were dumped out in the group stage on goal difference after Japan beat Spain 2-1 in the other tie in Group E.

Havertz still had collect his MOTM trophy after the final whistle and he could not hide his disappointment.

One fan tweeted: 'The most depressed MOTM you’ll ever see.'

Another fan said:  'That Havertz MOTM picture looks like a mugshot.'

And a third added: 'Sad for him but super funny picture.'

And it didn't get any better as a fed-up Havertz was forced to relive the painful exit in the post-match press conference.

Germany had arrived in Qatar determined to restore their tarnished reputation following their shock 2018 group stage exit.

Instead they finished third in the standings, level on four points with Spain but behind on goal difference and will return home early once more.

Japan topped Group E with six points following their 2-1 win over the Spaniards and will face Croatia in the last 16 while Spain will take on Morocco.

Costa Rica finished last on three points.
