Fans have torn into Liverpool after a banner of support was flown over Anfield during their 1-0 defeat to Fulham.

Mario Lemina dispossessed Mo Salah before brilliantly scoring on the edge of half-time, as last-year's champions fell to their sixth straight defeat of the season.

A plane with the message 'Unity is strength - let's go reds - YNWA,' flew over the stadium during the second-half of the game.

The aircraft was pictured on television sending support to the floundering current domestic champions.

It then lingered over Anfield shortly after first appearing, as several mocked the banner on social media.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville simply screen-grabbed the banner with five laughing face emojis.

Neville then posted a further video mocking the banner as he arrived at the Etihad Stadium for the Manchester derby.

The Sky Sports presenter said before laughing: 'Remember the most important thing today. As the plane that flew over Liverpool told us – unity is strength.'

Neville was not the only to make light of the banner which was unable to inspire Liverpool into a second-half comeback.

Bookmakers Paddy Power tweeted: 'At least if they do go on to lose, it won't be the most embarrassing thing to happen to Liverpool today.'

Twitter user Jack Melly commented: 'Liverpool having a plane banner cause they lost a few games at home is embarrassing.'

One user described the banner as 'cringe' while another added: 'Liverpool are the corniest club in the country and it's not even up for dispute.'

Rhys Evans tweeted: 'Oh no Liverpool have the banners out, are the banter years back.'

While another joked about their recent slide down the table as they commented: 'Liverpool dropped out the top 4 for about 3 weeks and they're flying banners over Anfield.'

The defeat to Fulham marked the first time Liverpool have ever lost six consecutive league games at home.

It follows an incredible record where they were unbeaten on their own turf in the league in 68 games.

It leaves Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread, as they sit four points off Chelsea who also have a game in hand.
