Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves disagree on whether Manchester United should focus on signing an elite striker in the summer transfer window.
United sealed their place in the Europa League final in Gdansk with an 8-5 aggregate triumph over Roma on Thursday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were defeated 3-2 in the Italian capital but still comfortably progressed through after the 6-2 first-leg thrashing at Old Trafford.
In-form frontman Edinson Cavani netted four goals across the two legs, including two ruthless finishes at the Stadio Olimpico.
Cavani, 34, now has seven goals in six games and his goalscoring prowess and vast experience is making United desperate to keep hold of him for another season.
The Uruguayan veteran could change the club's transfer plans this summer if they opt to postpone their search for a long-term striker option in favour of retaining him for one more year.
But United great Ferdinand believes United should still target an elite forward like Erling Haaland or Harry Kane even if Cavani stays.
"The only thing I worry about is that if Haaland or Kane go somewhere else, it’s only one season you get Cavani for one year," he told told BT Sport.
"What happens in the year after that, if you allow them to go somewhere else?
"As much as I love Cavani, if you’ve got the finances to keep Cavani there still and get one of them, you’ve got like the old days. Two players vying for the same position that you can bring in and out and you can rest people."
However, Hargreaves is less optimistic about the prospect of signing two of world football's most deadliest goal scorers in a challenging market.
The former United midfielder believes funds could be spent more wisely in three other key positions that need strengthening.
"Every ex-Man United player or fan would love Harry Kane or Erling Haaland," Hargreaves added.
‘But I think the money that would cost right now in the climate – it’s probably not realistic.
"I think Cavani is doing an unbelievable job.
"Obviously, getting him to sign a new deal there’s no transfer fee there. He’s on big wages.
"‘Then I think they need to sign a right winger - whether it’s Jadon Sancho or Raphina from Leeds or someone like that.
"Declan Rice at the base of the midfield to get the best out of Pogba and Fernandes – I’d love to see that.
"And then another centre-back. I think they can spend that money, that Haaland-Kane money on potentially three players."
