Rio Ferdinand says Jamie Vardy is too old for Manchester United but is surprised Hollywood-owned Wrexham haven't signed the veteran striker following a summer of big spending

Rio Ferdinand has expressed his surprise that Jamie Vardy hasn't signed for Wrexham after ruling out the possibility of him moving to Manchester United. The former England striker has been without a club since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season.

Vardy has been linked to numerous clubs over the summer, including the likes of Everton, Celtic and Rangers. More recently, there has been speculation that he could be heading for the MLS with Inter Miami or Serie A with Napoli, but the 38-year-old is still unattached.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, have also been connected with a swoop for the veteran free agent following their promotion to the Championship in April. And United legend Ferdinand is amazed that Vardy, who scored 200 goals in 500 games for the Foxes, hasn't arrived in North Wales following a period of big spending by the Red Dragons.

There have also been rumours during the transfer window that he could end up at Old Trafford as a back-up striker. However, Ferdinand believes it would be the wrong move for both parties, with Vardy understood to be keen for regular game time and United in need of players who will have a guaranteed impact up front.

Speaking on his Rio Presents YouTube channel, the ex-England international said: "As much as I love Jamie Vardy and I respect everything he's done in the game, he's not what Man United need right now. He's just gone a bit too far over the hill to really be able to impact the team.

"You can't bring someone in just to impact the changing room. He isn't going to want to come there and just sit down and just chill. He wants to play football, with the type of person he is. As much as he's got experience, it's just not the right time.

"I can't believe he's not signed for Wrexham. Right now, I just think it would probably be more harmful for Vardy to come here [to Man Utd] for himself than it would benefit us."

Vardy recently spoke out after two of his former Leicester teammates signed for Wrexham this summer with deals agreed for goalkeeper Danny Ward and defender Conor Coady. The pair have so far started in all three of the club's league games as they look to establish themselves in the second tier.

Writing on Instagram after Coady's switch was confirmed, Vardy said: "All the best brother. What a player and person."

As it stands, it would raise eyebrows if Wrexham did make a move for Vardy having already brought in ten new faces so far this summer, including several attackers. Manager Phil Parkinson has signed strikers Kieffer Moore and Ryan Hardie from Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle respectively.

Forwards Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead have also joined to bolster Wrexham's frontline. The Red Dragons have so far secured just one point from their opening three Championship fixtures after drawing 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday at home on Saturday.

Parkinson's side's face another tough challenge in their next league match as they travel to Millwall at the weekend.
