Flamengo 'optimistic they can pull off deal for free agent David Luiz'

Brazilian giants Flamengo have reportedly registered an interest in signing former Arsenal defender David Luiz this summer.

The 28-year-old previously meet with Flamengo's vice president Marco Braz and football director Bruno Spindel as the pair are said to be on a mission to bring in high profile players.

Flamengo could sign Luiz - who has been capped 57 times for Brazil's national team - for free this summer after his contract at the Emirates expired in June.

According to Globo, the financial aspect of the contract has been agreed and will not be the limiting factor to a deal being secured.

Luiz is, however, taking time to reach a decision over his next move as he wants to find a project that 'touches his heart'.

Nevertheless, fans have taken to social media to express their excitement over a potential deal with the player who has also represented Chelsea and PSG in the past.

There have been over 63,000 tweets shared using the hashtag '#DavidLuizNoFlamengo'.

The news of Flamengo's interest in Luiz comes just days after they signed Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira on a season-long loan.

The 25-year-old midfielder will return to his father's country of birth to play his football this season.

The loan move also marks his fourth loan spell at Old Trafford following his arrival from PSV Eindhoven over a decade ago.
