Dan Ashworth has returned to the Football Association and has been appointed their first-ever chief football officer.

Ashworth had previously been the FA's director of elite development and then technical director during a six-year period between 2013 and 2019 before leaving to work in club football.

The 54-year-old then left to work with Brighton, before joining Newcastle United as a Sporting Director in 2022 and then holding the same position at Manchester United between July and December 2024.

In his new role at the FA, Ashworth will be tasked with leading the high performance strategy, with his responsibilities including developing a successful England team and growing the number of home-grown coaches.

He will also oversee the regeneration of national football centre St George's Park ahead of Euro 2028, which is being hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

On his appointment, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: "Dan is a hugely influential and respected figure in the game, who has a long-standing commitment to England Football.

"We are very happy to welcome him back in this new role."
