According to RMC, Mendy, a member of France's 2018 World Cup-winning squad, recently auctioned off an official replica of his World Cup winner's trophy, which ultimately sold for $62,200 (approximately €54,000).
This decision seems quite surprising. As a member of the French team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Mendy lifted the trophy after defeating Croatia. Now, the French international has chosen to sell his official trophy replica, which was part of the "Global Soccer Auction, Part II" hosted by the American collectibles auction house Goldin.
According to Sportune, the collectible ultimately sold for $62,200 and came with a certificate of authenticity signed by Mendy himself, verifying its genuineness and origin. The replica trophy has a crack at the bottom and shows minor signs of use, along with an inscription commemorating France's victory at the Russia World Cup.
The auction concluded on July 25, shortly after Spain won the 2026 World Cup. The auction featured a large number of football-related collectibles, including items related to Yamal, Pelé, and Messi.
Mendy came through the Le Havre academy and played for Marseille and Monaco. In 2017, he transferred to Manchester City for €58 million, becoming one of the most expensive defenders in world football at the time.
However, in 2021, Mendy was investigated for multiple alleged rape and attempted rape cases, leading to a long period of inactivity and imprisonment. In July 2023, he was ultimately found not guilty of all related charges by the court.
After his acquittal, Mendy attempted to restart his career at Lorient and Zurich, but without ideal results. In September 2025, he joined the Polish team Pogoń Szczecin and recently extended his contract with the team for another year.
Although his decision to join the Polish league attracted outside attention, the 32-year-old left-back stated that he was drawn by the development plan presented by the club.
Mendy previously stated in an interview: "The Pogoń management took a very correct approach, which was very important to me. I needed time to regain my form, and after coming here, I felt good from day one. When the club showed me videos of the stadium, the match schedule, and the overall atmosphere, I was also surprised. Many people outside of Poland don't realize how wonderful Polish football is."
