Former world champion aspires to become president of River Plate

The club's bylaws prohibit the current president, Jorge Brito, from running for re-election.

David Trezeguet was a champion of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 as a player, thanks to his goal in extra time of the final against Italy, with the French national team, but his roots are Argentine on his mother's side and his father, Jorge, also a footballer.

Born in Rouen 47 years ago, Trezeguet grew up in Buenos Aires and, although he made his professional debut at Platense , he arrived in Europe in 1995 to sign for Monaco and then played for Juventus, Hércules and Baniyas (United Arab Emirates) before returning to Argentina.

River Plate brought him back before he joined Newell's Old Boys and retired at Pune City in India in 2014. 'Trezegol', as he was known in football, only spent a season and a half at the 'millionaire' club, from December 2011 to July 2013, enough time to become imbued with his feelings.

He signed to return River to the elite

It was no coincidence that Trezeguet signed for River Plate, which had just been relegated to the Primera B Nacional for the first time in its history. His 13 goals helped him return to the elite a year later.

Now, 12 years later, according to TNT Sports , Trezeguet is expected to run for the presidency of River Plate. He left his position as Juventus ambassador in 2021 and is looking for a new project.

The former French international (71 caps, 34 goals) is reportedly organizing his team for the elections to be held next December. If he ultimately stands, he will face Stefano Di Carlo (29 years old), the club's current general secretary, and Carlos Trillo to succeed current president Jorge Brito, who is statutorily barred from running for re-election.
