Robert Lewandowski could finally land the Ballon d’Or award that many felt he deserved to win in 2020.
The Poland international was the favourite to scoop the 2020 edition, however, the award was later scrapped due to the COVID pandemic.
Lewandowski was at the peak of his powers having fired Bayern Munich to the Treble, including the Champions League final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
He netted a staggering 55 goals in 47 games across all competitions and was widely tipped as a shoo-in for the award.
Diario Sport’s Ivan San Antonio via Sportskeeda reports that France Football are considering giving it after all albeit four years delayed. Although nothing is official as of now, Lewandowski won’t mind as he was quoted as saying that “if I won the Ballon d’Or four years later, I wouldn’t feel offended, it would be a great honor and I would accept the award”.
The best that Lewy got was a Lego version of the award and the best striker award in the 2021 awards, which was promptly scrapped soon after. He was in the running for the award in 2021 but was pipped by serial Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
