Gary Neville insists Solskjaer is WRONG believing Man Utd are title contenders

Gary Neville has offered a blunt assessment of Manchester United's Premier League title hopes after manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said they are genuine contenders.

The Red Devils played out a bore draw against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday and sit eighth in the league table, one point ahead of their local rivals.

Despite the lack of chances on show, Solskjaer said it was United's best performance in a derby match under his watch - but former defender Neville was left unconvinced by the performance.

'Last season was massive finishing third,' Neville said on Sky Sports when asked about the club's chances of winning the league . 'I think that was a big, big moment for him [Solskjaer].

'But I think now he has got to get close to City and Liverpool. And he has got to dominate matches.

'I don't see it at this moment in time. The performances I am watching are not anywhere near got enough. We know him - he won't think they're good enough.'

Neville's comments come after the Norwegian boss backed his side for silverware in the near future and sees them developing into genuine title contenders.

'At Manchester United, you should always aim to win trophies,' Solskjaer said.

'Of course, with the last three seasons, as they have been, there's been two teams far ahead of the rest of the pack.

'I got belief during the season, or since the turn of the new year, that this team is improving and that we can put up a challenge.

'Of course we need to improve on last season but I don't think any team will run away with it.

'I go into every single game wanting to win, so maybe that's the answer to your question. If you win every game you end up with a trophy.'

However, inconsistency under Solskjaer has been the main problem. United crashed out of the Champions League midweek in after a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig and made up for a shocking first 60 minutes against West Ham last weekend with a late flurry of goals.

Neville admitted that their standard is not good enough to earn them a Premier League title, with the club having not won the league since 2013.

'He won't think that first half against West Ham is anywhere near the standard that is going to get Manchester United to a title,' said the former Red Devils defender.

'He obviously will keep putting a positive spin on it and today said it's the best they've played against City but the reality of it is he'll know they're not performances that will win titles. They're not; they're nowhere near.'
