Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted he is no closer to securing a new contract at Anfield ahead of his current deal coming to an end in the summer, but says he will be 'devastated' if he has to leave the club.

Wijnaldum addressed the media following his manager Jurgen Klopp on Monday afternoon, ahead of Liverpool's Champions League second leg clash with RB Leipzig in Budapest.

The Dutch international, who has played in every single league game for the Reds this season, is able to walk away from Anfield for free in the summer with growing speculation that Ronald Koeman wishes to take him to Barcelona.

Opening up on the topic, Wijnaldum revealed that there is still much to be done, and that at the present moment he is unsure what the future holds.

He said: 'There is no news as it is right now. I would like if i come with news, all i can say is I'm really happy with the club, with the team, staff and the fans for who I play. It is not that I'm not happy or that I have to leave or something like that.

'It's not as easy as everyone thinks it is to make some decisions about your future, you have to think about everything and then first negotiate with the clubs and it's so difficult and it's why it takes so long, also I think the situation we're in right now means its not the most important thing.

'That is getting back on track and winning games and then we will see. I'm happy with the fans, the team, the staff, beside that there is no news.

When asked how painful he would find it should he have to call time on his Liverpool career, Wijnaldum was forthcoming with his answer.

'[find it] Really difficult because if that happens you leave a team who you really love, a team you share a lot of years together and where you feel really comfortable.

'It will be difficult but you don't know the situation, why you have to leave it always depends on the situation.

'But I would be devastated that I don't play with this team anymore, that is for sure.'

Klopp's trusted lieutenant also acknowledges the dire state of affairs the reigning champions have before them right now, following a historic sixth consecutive Anfield home defeat, but says a huge part of this is down to the absence of fans.

'I believe that the things that are happening to us right now would not happen if there were fans in the stadium, because the fans help us a lot through difficult times,' Wijnaldum added.

'When you have difficult times during a game the fans are there to help you get over it, to give you even more energy than you have in that moment. But does it really affect us in a way that means we cannot get results without fans? I don't think that way.

'It's more of course they make us stronger, I think that we can do better even without fans in the stadium. I'm sure and I think everyone is with with me that the situation we have right now would not happen if fans were in the stadium.'
