Germany win with four Bavarians

  /  Ben

Germany beat Peru 2-1 in the first friendly after the World Cup. Jerome Boateng, Niklas Sule and Joshua Kimmich made the starting line-up. The 25,494 capacity crowd in Sinsheim saw Luis Advincula put the South Americans in front after 21 minutes, Julian Brandt soon levelling the scores and Germany debutant Nico Schulz handing the hosts the lead with five minutes to go. Germany next face the Netherlands in a Nations League match in Amsterdam on 13 October.

Munich centre-backs Boateng and Sule were rarely called into action in the first half, but they were alert when needed. Kimmich started in defensive midfield as against France, frequently gaining possession and playing a part in dangerous attacks again and again. The hosts were in utter control but failed to make the most of their many chances. The second half was more balanced, Germany failing to keep up the pressure.

Germany coach Joachim Low, who equalled Sepp Herberger's record of overseeing 167 international matches, made five changes to the team that drew against France. Among others, Thomas Muller, who was brought on in the closing stages, Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka started on the bench on Sunday. Mats Hummels missed out with an Achilles tendon problem.

Germany line-up against Peru: ter Stegen – Ginter (Kehrer 72), Boateng (Rüdiger 46), Süle, Schulz – Kroos, Kimmich, Gündogan (Müller 84) – Brandt (Petersen 70), Reus (Draxler 46), Werner (Havertz 88)
