The legendary Italian defender will begin a new stage with the team with which he was the MLS Cup champion in 2022.
Giorgio Chiellini will return to Los Angeles Football Club after announcing his retirement last December and will do so as player development coach. In his new role, the former Italy international will work with head coach Steve Cherundolo and his coaching staff to assist in the development of first-team players.
The legendary Italian defender spent two seasons with the MLS team and helped them win the MLS Cup in 2022. Chiellini had a huge impact on the entire institution and brought new standards to the team during his time in Los Angeles.
Chiellini the player
“We are grateful to have had Giorgio Chiellini for the last 18 months of his career with Los Angeles FC,” said LAFC co-president John Thorrington. “During that time he proved his value to LAFC and we are very pleased to continue to have one of the brightest minds in football, a leader and a better human being.”
Chiellini arrived in the summer of 2022 at Los Angeles FC and made 13 appearances, including 10 starts. In his first season, he was a key part of the defence for the 2022 MLS Cup-winning team.
Chiellini helped the Black & Gold to seven straight MLS playoff wins between 2022 and 2023. The Italian also won the Supporters’ Shield in 2022 and two Western Conference titles with Los Angeles Fútbol Club.
