Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was arrested in 2020 after a clash with police on the Greek island of Mykonos and was initially found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery and sentenced to 21 months in prison with probation.

After six years of legal battles, Maguire lost his appeal and was sentenced to 15 month in prison, and suspended.

According to The Sun, Maguire refused to pay a £50,000 "bribe" to settle a brawl he was involved in while on holiday in Greece. A source close to the player told The Sun: "The other side suggested that if Maguire paid £50,000, the matter would go away. He would rather be found guilty than bribe someone. He will never apologise or pay any money. Harry will clear his name. He will fight to the end until he clears his name, even if it means appealing to the highest court."

The source said that the lawyers for the plainclothes police officers involved in the late-night clash had repeatedly proposed out-of-court settlements: "It has always been about money. He hasn't paid a penny and won't pay anything, he stands by his principles and values and will not compromise. For six years, the other side has repeatedly told us that if Maguire pays £50,000, this matter can be resolved."

"The reason things have progressed to this point is that Harry is unwilling to do that."
