Griezmann: Atletico can do something 'historic' in Champions League

Antoine Griezmann believes Atletico Madrid can do something "historic" in the Champions League, with his eyes on the trophy.

Atletico head to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in their semi-final second leg on Tuesday, with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after last week's meeting.

They are looking to reach the Champions League final for the third time under Diego Simeone (previously in 2014 and 2016).

Only two managers have ever reached more finals in the competition with the same club: Alex Ferguson with Manchester United and Marcello Lippi with Juventus (four each).

Griezmann will leave Atletico at the end of the season, having already signed a deal with MLS side Orlando City SC.

Reports had suggested he could leave in March, but he opted to stay, and Griezmann said he never had plans to leave earlier, as he aims to sign off with a trophy.

"I was always clear: my goal was to stay here, because we could do something incredible," Griezmann said when asked whether he was relieved he had chosen not to sign for Orlando earlier.

"I had no doubts. I felt we could do something historic, with another final, and the team knows it."

Griezmann was present the last time Atletico made it to the Champions League final in 2016.

Simeone's side lost 5-3 on penalties to Real Madrid following a 1-1 draw after extra time, with Griezmann missing a penalty in regulation time before scoring in the shootout.

"That year was very different," Griezmann said of the final 10 years ago. "I was under a lot of stress.

"Everything was going so fast, and I didn't know how to slow down. Now I'm more well-rounded and calmer. I approach the matches more relaxed and with a lot more joy.

"These are moments you think will come back, but they don't. Not everyone gets to play in a Champions League semi-final ... We can make history."

Winless in their two games against Arsenal this season (D1 L1), Atletico last faced an opponent at least three times in a single campaign without managing a victory in 2022-23, versus Real Madrid (D1 L2).

Atletico have also lost six of their last seven away games against English sides in the Champions League (W1), including each of the last four in a row.

Their defeat at the Emirates earlier this season (0-4 in October 2025) remains their joint-heaviest loss in the competition (along with five other defeats by four goals).
