According to The Guardian, Manchester United has had their worst start to a season since 1986. If the board decides to change managers, Emery and Nagelsmann are the main candidates to succeed Carrick as head coach.

Carrick is still expected to lead the team in Sunday's home match against Bournemouth and attend the pre-match press conference on Friday as planned. However, with only two wins in the first 11 games of the season, the 45-year-old coach's position is precarious. Manchester United suffered a heavy away defeat in Wednesday's Champions League match, losing 4-1 to Como. This loss has intensified focus on finding a successor should Carrick be dismissed. Both Emery and Nagelsmann are admired by board members.
Emery's contract with Aston Villa runs until 2029. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, left the German national team after Euro 2024 and is currently unemployed. Since taking over Villa in 2022, Emery has impressed. Last season, he led them to win the Europa League, securing the club's first major trophy since 1996, while also finishing fourth in the league, one spot below Manchester United.
However, Emery's annual salary is between £10 million and £12 million, and the compensation Manchester United would have to pay Villa for his release could be an obstacle. He has also led Sevilla, Paris Saint-Germain, and Villarreal to titles, but his tenure at Arsenal was relatively less successful.
Nagelsmann has coached Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich, leading Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2022 before being sacked in March 2023. Manchester United's director of football, Christopher Vivell, holds him in high regard. The 39-year-old led the German national team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where they were eliminated by champions Spain. It is understood that he would be interested if Manchester United approached him.
Other potential candidates include Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe, and Kieran McKenna. All three are currently unemployed after leaving Napoli, Newcastle United, and Ipswich, respectively. It is also understood that Fabian Hürzeler is unwilling to leave Brighton at this stage.
During Manchester United's away loss to Como, captain Bruno Fernandes had his home broken into while he was with the team. It is understood that his family was not home at the time, and the intruders were inside for less than five minutes before police arrived. The club is providing support to Fernandes and his family, stating that they are going through a difficult time and asking for privacy. Furthermore, Bruno Fernandes is not expected to face disciplinary action for criticizing Carrick following Wednesday's loss. After the defeat, Fernandes questioned the coach's tactics.
