Di María previously announced that he would retire from the national team after the Copa América. In September 2008, he made his debut for Argentina's senior national team in a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.
Over 16 years, Di María has made 145 appearances for Argentina, scoring 31 goals and providing 32 assists. He won the Copa América, the World Cup, and the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions (Finalissima) with the team. Di María also helped Argentina's Olympic team win the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics.
