If any second thoughts about moving to Bayern Munich had crept into Callum Hudson-Odoi’s head, they’d have evaporated at around 4.30pm.
Two starts in quick succession - albeit in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup - may have had the teenager wondering.
‘Maybe I can become a regular here at Chelsea?,’ he may have pondered.
Maurizio Sarri’s claim last week that he was ready to hand Hudson-Odoi a more prominent role may have sowed a further seed of doubt in the winger’s mind.
Because, according to those close to Hudson-Odoi, in his heart-of-hearts - the teenager doesn’t want to leave Chelsea.
If he could choose between being a regular at Stamford Bridge and a regular at the Allianz Arena - he opt for the former.
But as Sarri confirmed his starting XI for the clash against Newcastle it all became abundantly clear for the super-talented 18-year-old.
Chelsea were back in Premier League action; Hudson-Odoi was back on the bench.
He was introduced for a brief 10 minute cameo, but that is unlikely to have altered his thinking.
As the evening developed, it was hard to fault Sarri’s selection, Chelsea’s wingers Pedro and Willian scoring their goals in a 2-1 win.
But if Hudson-Odoi, as expected, completes his switch to Bavaria this week, he’ll do so without having made a single Premier League start.
He’ll leave having played just 52 minutes of top-flight football - that’s an incredible statistic considering his near £40million price-tag.
But credit to Bayern for putting their money where their mouth is; for showing that kind of faith in a player with such little top-level experience.
It’s more than can be said for Chelsea. Hudson-Odoi is certainly an unpolished gem but it’s Chelsea’s duty to give their rough diamonds the tender, love and care necessary to sparkle.
That means playing them, giving them opportunities, keeping faith even when they are making mistakes.
But it’s becoming crystal clear that under Sarri, Chelsea will not be changing their ethos when it comes to giving youngsters a chance.
Therefore the onus is in Hudson-Odoi to force that change. Fair play to him for refusing to sing to Chelsea’s tune.
Once Ruben Loftus-Cheek - another academy graduate - returns from a back problem he’ll find the same frustrations.
Cesc Fabregas’ departure appears to free up a position in Chelsea’s already congested central midfield options.
By the time the England star is fit to return he could find one - maybe even two - new central midfielders at the club with the Blues chasing Nicolo Barella and Leandro Paredes.
The Chelsea fans made their feelings known as Hudson-Odoi was introduced as an 80 minute substitute.
‘Hudson-Odoi we want you to stay,’ they roared. It’s looking increasingly likely that that ship has sailed.
