I used to be coached by Pep Guardiola but now I'm a MasterChef champion!

Eneko Fernandez was once part of an exciting Barcelona academy side but, now, his greatest claim to fame will be winning Spain's version of MasterChef.

The 39-year-old boasts one of the most bizarre career routes on the planet, having broken through at La Masia before, much later, turning his attention to the kitchen.

And, after focusing on his culinary passion, the Spaniard has now claimed the MasterChef title for the programme's eleventh season.

Fernandez, who retired from professional football in 2015, expressed his delight at winning the title and labelled it the 'best experience of my life'.

He said: 'I am proud of myself, it is very strange for me to say these things to myself, but I really am. It has been the experience of my life.'

It marks a major turnaround in Fernandez's career, having initially set his sights on becoming a professional footballer in Spain.

Born in Zaragoza, Fernandez began his youth career in the area before eventually earning a move to Barcelona B.

During his time there, Fernandez would have been under the careful tutelage of current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

The former Bayern Munich boss only spent one season as the academy's boss - during 2007-08 - but it was during that time that Fernandez played.

Elsewhere in that academy team were the likes of future Barcelona stars Sergio Busquets and Pedro.

Unfortunately for Fernandez, his career at Barcelona was short-lived and, one year later, he secured a move to SD Ejea.

After stints with a number of Spanish club, Fernandez eventually called time on his playing career after a spell with third-division side CD Tudelano in 2015.
