Ajax officially finished the Eredivisie season in second place after their 2-0 win over FC Twente.
With five new names in the starting lineup, Ajax opened with purpose and played with a tempo not often seen in recent matches. A dynamic-playing Ajax saw Brian Brobbey and Kenneth Taylor get heavily involved in the final third, but found no breakthrough just yet.
The first big chance of the game was for FC Twente when Ricky van Wolfswinkel headed the ball at Remko Pasveer's goal, but the 41-year-old stopper pulled out a magnificent save to keep the game goalless. A short period during which FC Twente had the initiative was soon over, and Ajax regained control.
The home side finally cashed in on the on-field dominance and took the lead after 28 minutes when captain Jordan Henderson scored his first Eredivisie goal from Youri Regeer's free-kick.
Ajax were seemingly handed the 2-0 on a platter when Indonesian international Mees Hilgers, who caused the free-kick from which Ajax took the lead, lost the ball deep on his own half. Brian Brobbey laid it off to Steven Berghuis, but the winger could not finish a 1-on-1 with Przemyslaw Tyton with his weaker right foot.
The Johan Cruyff ArenA erupted after the second half had started following Sparta Rotterdam's equaliser against PSV - a goal which virtually handed Ajax the Eredivisie title - and their team doubling the lead through substitute Wout Weghorst, who drop-kicked the ball past the near post. The VAR cancelled the goal, however, for offside.
It was double disappointment for the home fans after word of PSV's Luuk de Jong scoring the 2-1 against Sparta reached the Johan Cruyff ArenA.
FC Twente got several chances in the twenty minutes in Amsterdam as Van Wolfswinkel and Michel Vlap came close to the equaliser, but it was Ajax who doubled the lead through Wout Weghorst in injury time.
A title wasn't to be for Ajax, who squandered a 9-point lead in the final weeks of the season and will finish the Eredivisie season in second.
