Inter 2-0 Como: Chivu's side close the gap to leaders Lazio

Inter bounced back from their Milan derby loss last weekend to brush aside in-form Como 2-0 at San Siro and move within a point of Serie A leaders Lazio.

Francesco Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram scored within the first 19 minutes to put Inter in control, and Como, who had won their last four league games, failed to muster a response.

Nico Paz blazed over with just six minutes on the clock, and Como struggled to cause Inter any real problems after that, instead finding themselves on the back foot.

Thuram drove into the box after a lovely flowing move before cutting it back to Djed Spence on the right, and he squared it into the middle for Esposito to turn in from yards out after 12 minutes.

Just seven minutes later, Thuram doubled their lead. Piotr Zielinski's cross was only half-cleared by Alex Valle, and the Inter striker was there to drill it into the back of the net.

Nicolo Barella, Carlos Augusto and Thuram all fired wide as they attempted to add to Inter's advantage before the break.

Federico Dimarco spearheaded Inter's attack at the start of the second half, seeing a swerving outside-of-the-boot shot smothered by Robert Sanchez before dragging wide moments later.

Thuram came closest to getting their third, though, profiting from hesitant Como defending to fizz a low drive inches wide of the far post from the right of the box.

Como eventually put Inter under pressure, with Paz's rising effort skimming the crossbar on its way over, but the hosts' clean sheet never looked in doubt as they held out for all three points.

Inter get a much-needed response

After their Derby della Madonnina loss last weekend saw them slip away from the top of the table, Cristian Chivu will have been determined to avoid a second straight defeat ahead of the international break.

But Como – who entered this match on the back of a record-breaking 9-1 win over Lens in the Champions League – did not pose an easy challenge.

Inter rose to it, though, winning their 12th straight Serie A match against Como, extending their longest-ever winning streak against a single opponent in the competition.

Esposito once again proved important in the continued absence of injured captain Lautaro Martinez, as he became the first Italian born in 2005 or later to reach 10 goals in Serie A.

It was his third goal of the season, but his first since the 5-3 win over Udinese on September 14, ending a six-game goal drought in the competition.

After their midweek heroics, though, Cesc Fabregas will be severely disappointed with what Como offered at the top of the pitch. They had just five shots worth 0.2 expected goals (xG), and only tested Josep Martinez once.

Inter, by contrast, got four of their 14 attempts on target (accumulating 1.86 xG), with Thuram leading their charge by having five of those.

He ended a run of two games without a goal, netting his fifth goal in four league matches against Como – he has only scored more against Torino (seven goals in five matches).
