Phil Foden spoke about expectations for the squad ahead of a new season where Manchester City are looking to raise standards again.

Phil Foden has said that Manchester City needed new signings to breathe life back into the team after everything went wrong last year.

Foden was one of a number of players whose form suffered an alarming dip and Pep Guardiola was unable to cope with an injury crisis that robbed him of Rodri for the whole campaign as well as a reliable centre-back pairing.

With so many issues, City crashed out of the Premier League and Champions League by February and had to scramble to secure a top-four finish on the final day.

The club acted quickly and emphatically, spending nearly £110m before the Club World Cup in addition to the £175m spent in the January window to start a squad rebuild that the manager had blocked the previous summer. Having suffered such a disappointing campaign, the club are determined not to go through it all again.

So many new faces could mean City look very different when the season gets going, but Foden is looking to be central again as he aims to recapture the form that saw him deservedly named as the league's best player for the 2023/24 title win.

The 25-year-old is happy to have fresh talent to play with and believes they have quickly integrated with a squad that are hungry to win the league back from Liverpool.

"It is needed after last season, bringing in fresh legs and the new additions have done well. They have settled very quickly," he said.

"We can all see their quality from the Club World Cup and what they bring to the team. We have got a big squad at the moment but I think it is definitely needed. I'm looking forward to the season and linking up with players that I like to play with and enjoying it really.

"It always gets to a time when any club needs to add new players and freshen things up and we have done that in this transfer window. That can only be good for us as the players we have brought in are very high level and fit right into the team and give us something we need a little bit more so we are here to help and we have got a very good squad now.

"I think everyone wants to make up for last season, we all want to come to our best and winning titles. We have got a lot of experience in the dressing room, with Bernardo [Silva] being captain and hopefully he can push the lads on, we have got all the experience and we have done it before."
