James Rodriguez has signed a short-term deal with Minnesota United.

James was without a club after his contract with Mexican side Leon was not renewed at the end of 2025, but he has boosted his World Cup chances by moving to MLS.

He has signed a contract with Minnesota through to June – ahead of the tournament – with a team option through to December.

"I'm very happy for this new chapter in my life," Rodriguez said.

"I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all the people who are putting their faith in me.

"I'm looking forward to meeting all the passionate Minnesota fans because I'm also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always wants to win."

This is James' sixth club since 2020, having short spells at Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos, Sao Paulo, Rayo Vallecano and Leon.

In 2025, James made 34 appearances in all competitions for Leon, scoring five goals and registering nine assists.

The Colombian, who made his breakthrough at the 2014 World Cup, is hoping to help Minnesota qualify for the playoffs again, with the Loons finishing fourth in the Western Conference last season before being knocked out in the semifinals.
