Jamie Carragher has highlighted why Manchester United’s issues would not happen at Liverpool.
There has been plenty of noise around Man United’s struggles, both on and off the pitch. Despite a decent run of league results, there remain question marks over manager Erik ten Hag, while supporters are also awaiting updates on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s attempt to purchase a stake in the club, amid well--documented protests against the Glazers’ ownership.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Man United had banned four media outlets over a story relating to the relationship between Ten Hag and some of the players within his squad. Discussing the story, Liverpool legend Carragher explained why a similar situation never occurred during his time at Anfield.
“I was at a club where I don’t think there is any other club like Liverpool, in terms of how the supporters treat a manager,” Carragher said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show.
“The manager at Liverpool is like a God. If Liverpool are successful it’s always the manager.
“Right now it’s Klopp, it’s Shankly, it’s Paisley, Dalglish – all these figures. So the manager at Liverpool has so much power, I always feel.
“So those things at Liverpool when I was there never really came out against the manager because the supporters and the board would always be really with the manager. It wouldn’t be a case of speaking to the players, what do you think of the manager, that would never happen. These types of things never came out.”
Carragher pointed to the similarities between Liverpool’s respect for the manager and Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Manchester United. Having played under Ferguson for his entire career, Gary Neville made his views clear on the idea of Man United players speaking out against the club.
“The biggest betrayal you can have in a football dressing room is when players are going to the media to undermine the manager and other players in your dressing room,” he said. “Honestly, that is f****** unforgivable.”
