Jeremie Frimpong insists 'this is just the start' for Florian Wirtz

Liverpool new boy Jeremie Frimpong insists he knows how good Florian Wirtz can be and reckons the German will soon start repaying his £116million price tag.

Flying full back Frimpong was first to leave Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool and the £29.5m move paved the way for his good mate Wirtz to follow, with the two clubs opening talks about the latter during the first deal.

And now Frimpong, who has come into the side recently after a nasty hamstring injury, is sure that Wirtz will soon flourish and does not care about his big fee.

'He is top,' said the 25-year-old. 'I know how good of a player Flo is. Like I've said in plenty of interviews, if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have won the treble (Bundesliga, German Cup and Europa League runner-up) with Leverkusen.

'So we know how good he is and to see him doing it now… this is just the start. There's plenty to come.

'Flo is the type of player that doesn't care about these things, the price tag. He's just happy to play football. For me personally, I think Flo takes pressure really well. He's just a guy that just loves the ball on his feet.

'When he plays he's just enjoying it. So for me, I don't think he cares about all this. Of course, on the outside, what was it, £116m? I don't think he cares about all that. He knows how good he is. He just wants to play.

'Of course (it helped joining at the same time) 100 per cent. Me and Flo are really good boys, that's my boy. So, when I heard he was coming, I put a smile on my face because we basically started our Leverkusen career together. And we're starting our Liverpool career together as well.

'We talk, obviously, but sometimes we stay at home. Of course, sometimes we'll link up and go, like, to town, go to a restaurant, do normal things.'

Frimpong has taken up pilates during his time on the sidelines, which saw him miss league matches for the first time since the 2021-22 season. He had two hamstring blows, one of which saw him ruled out for around eight weeks.

It is also understood he has bulked up around 4kilograms, similar to his friend Wirtz, and has been studying right backs to improve that side of his game. He is also said to have gotten quicker in the last year, which is something he has been working on.

Frimpong added: 'It was really tough (being out) because I'm not really the kind of guy that gets injured. So, it's really difficult for me to deal with. Now I'm healthier. I feel good.

'I just think it's part of the game, you know. Injuries happen to people and I guess it was just my turn.'

Liverpool travel to Fulham on Sunday and should be boosted by the return of Joe Gomez to the squad.
